Happy New Year 2015

Happy New Year 2015Once again another Mendocino New Year's Eve sunset. We've counted 19 years celebrating New Year's together here in Mendo and the sunsets never fail us. This year's trip, however, had us worrying about Robert's 93 year old mom who fell and broke her hip and underwent surgery on New Year's Eve. I'm  happy to be able to say she came through well and is now on that road to recovery.
Life

I read back through my last year's holiday greeting, looking at our pictures of our growing family and am so very proud of them all. Life is good, even with the bumps and bruises we get along the way. Not a lot has changed; we are all only a year older. Even my travel is the same! I know what I love and I just want to do it all again. After all those years of studying in Mexico over the summer, I have discovered the luxury of doing nothing on a Kailua beach. This last summer, I rented a little cottage, 100 yards from the beach, with Alisha joining me for part of the trip, my friend Ruth another part, and just me at the end . . . booking again this coming summer! I did get my Mexico time in though. Robert and I spent Spring Break in Oaxaca, eating mole and drinking mescal-- thinking of repeating that again this spring too, after he comes back from his trip to Spain.

The kids and grandkids are moving through life too. Shauna moved into the new Kaiser Hospital in Redwood City, bringing babies into the world. Alisha got a new job teaching math to 7th graders at Ralston Middle School in Belmont and Eric is on Year 2 of his doctoral program at the University of Kansas, researching and teaching. Hailey, age 10 and Logan, age 8 are busy with sports and activities, swimming, soccer, baseball, volleyball, basketball, horseback riding, and music lessons. I can't believe Hailey's age has moved into 2-digit numbers. Life. Carter is 3, moving towards 4 and is about the happiest kid alive. Ask him to sing you Donovan's "Hurdy Gurdy Man" someday. Carter and Robert's two grandson's RJ, age 5 and Dylan, age 3 are great friends. They often come visit us as a package of 3! Paige, age 8, is absolutely charming- we got to enjoy an evening with her in SF watching Elf, the Musical together with Chelsea this Christmas. Justin, 22 already, hangs with Robert watching their beloved Giants. He has taken two trips to Europe and is off to Scandinavia again soon. Joel and Trich still live in San Francisco, and Chelsea and Joey in Half Moon Bay, but we lost Amber and Steve to the Oregon Coast- not really "lost" though, as Robert and I love Oregon and visited them last August on our trip through Portland and the Willamette Valley.

I'm still in San Carlos, in my 13th year as principal . . . Like me on my school's Heather's Facebook Page or Follow me on Twitter. It is one of those jobs that is hard every day, but I love it, kind of like a climber and Mt. Everest. Robert continues to paint the City's victorians. We have quite the balancing act with both of our jobs, 6 grown kids and 7 grandkids with a boatload of activities to watch. We try to carve out time for us each weekend, enjoying a movie or a meal in SF together, and look forward to ending one year and starting another together here in Mendocino, in front of a fire and that gorgeous sunset.

I wish YOU and YOURS a very happy and healthy 2015.

  1. What a busy and fun year it has been for you! You have a beautiful family, and you've been to some beautiful places. Just one question for you... where do you get the magic elixir that stops you from ever aging? Best wishes to Robert and I hope his mom is fully recovered quickly.
    Love,
    Kyra
